Methodology

How this dataset was compiled, verified, and categorized.

This dataset tracks AI adoption across 50 Fortune 500 companies selected for breadth of industry coverage and verifiability of AI initiatives. Data is compiled from four primary sources: (1) Public earnings calls and investor presentations from Q3 2025 through Q1 2026, where AI investment figures, headcount, and strategy are discussed by CEOs and CFOs on the record. (2) SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q, proxy statements) for capital expenditure figures, technology budget disclosures, and risk factor discussions referencing AI. (3) Official company press releases, blog posts, and technology announcements detailing specific AI deployments, partnerships, and product launches. (4) Verified third-party sources including the Fortune AIQ 50 ranking (September 2025), Forrester CEO survey data, BCG enterprise AI survey (2026), and patent databases (USPTO, WIPO). AI maturity levels are assigned based on a composite assessment: "Leader" companies have AI embedded across multiple business units with measurable revenue or cost impact at scale. "Accelerator" companies have significant AI investments and multiple production deployments. "Adopter" companies have active AI programs with several use cases in production or advanced pilots. "Explorer" companies have announced AI strategies and early-stage deployments. Investment figures use the most specific publicly available data; where companies report total technology budgets but not AI-specific figures, estimates are noted. All figures are in USD.
